Description
The tower is a round brick structure topped by a lantern house with an iron walkway and railing around it. A brick single-story workroom projects from the tower, and is connected to the house by a shed-roofed wood-frame ell. The keeper's house is a two-story wood-frame structure.
Brief History
• It was construced in 1856
• Lighthouse Board records state that following various repairs made in 1867 through 1869.
• In 1880, the exterior walls of the dwelling were painted with two coats of white paint, and in 1882 “the dwelling was underpinned with stone and brick.”
• Winter Island Lighthouse was auctioned off in 1934 to George Harmon of Bar Harbor for $552.
• In 2022, Sofield had Mark Island and its lighthouse placed on the market for $2.3 million.
