Description
A lighthouse tower and wooden trestle bridge that separated the tower and the keeper’s dwelling. The dwelling was also built of rubble masonry, and had two rooms, a lean-to kitchen on the first floor, and two rooms in its attic, and fog signal building.
Brief History
• $4,000 was approved in March 1825 to build the lighthouse.
• By 1901 the keeper’s house was badly in need of repair and house was rebuilt in 1903 with a raised walkway to the tower.
• The station was automated in 1972 and the lens was removed.
• The light was sold at auction in January 2013 to a private owner from Connecticut.
• Mistake Island is maintained by the Nature Conservancy however the Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse.
