Description
A cylindrical tower,fourth-order Fresnel lens, was built atop an offshore ledge and linked to the island with a foot-bridge. The station also included a keeper’s dwelling, fuel house, boathouse, and landing.
Brief History
• Samuel John Cavanor, who earned $540 annually, exhibited Ram Island Light for the first time on November 5, 1883.
• On July 7, 1939, with WWII looming for the United States, the Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service.
• 1977, The Coast Guard rebuilt the lighthouse with new bricks and refurbished the lantern.
• 1970, The boathouse was destroyed in a February blizzard.
• 1998, Property was transferred to Grand Banks Schooner Museum Trust.
