Description
This beacon was set in the steeple of the First Baptist Church.
Brief History
• The light, seen through a window in the steeple, is 127 feet above mean high water.
• The station was first established in 1872. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1927.
• The keeper's dwelling was altered in 1941 to provide barracks for 20 men.
• Admiral William B. Ellis and his wife Dorcas lived at the lighthouse for a time in the 1960s.
• The church was destroyed in a fire in 1975, but the steeple survived; it was incorporated into the rebuilt church.
