The U.S. Department of Energy uses the station as a platform for wind energy testing and not open to the public.
Brief History
• The station was originally established in 1930 as a lightship station.
• The Chesapeake Light Tower stands 13 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean off Virginia Beach.
• The lightship continued to mark the Bay entrance until 1965, when it was replaced with Chesapeake Light Station.
• Chesapeake Light Tower was commissioned on September 25, 1965.
• On June 3, 2016, the General Services Administration initiated an online auction for Chesapeake Light Tower.
